If you are looking for a fun, action-packed, and hilarious movie to watch this summer, look no further than The Suicide Squad, the latest DC Comics adaptation from writer-director James Gunn. The Suicide Squad is a reboot of the 2016 film Suicide Squad, but you don’t need to have seen the previous one to enjoy this one. In fact, you might enjoy it more if you haven’t.
The Suicide Squad follows a group of super-villains who are recruited by the ruthless Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to carry out a dangerous mission on a remote island called Corto Maltese. The catch is that they have explosive devices implanted in their heads that will detonate if they disobey orders or try to escape. The team consists of Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), and a few others who may or may not survive the opening scene.
The mission is to infiltrate a secret facility and destroy a mysterious weapon known as Project Starfish, which turns out to be a giant alien starfish named Starro that can control people’s minds with its mini starfish spawn. Along the way, the squad faces various obstacles, such as hostile soldiers, rebel guerrillas, and their own personal issues. They also have to deal with the moral dilemma of whether they are doing the right thing or just following orders.
The Suicide Squad is a blast from start to finish. It is full of creative and colorful action scenes that showcase the unique abilities and personalities of each character. The movie does not shy away from showing the violence and gore that comes with being a super-villain, but it also balances it with a lot of humor and heart. The movie has a distinct style and tone that reflects Gunn’s vision and his experience with making B-movies and comic book movies. The movie also pays homage to various genres and influences, such as war movies, monster movies, and spy movies.
The cast is excellent and they have great chemistry with each other. Elba and Cena are perfect as the rival leaders who have different views on what it means to be a hero. Robbie is once again delightful as the crazy and charismatic Harley Quinn, who gets some of the best moments in the movie. Dastmalchian and Melchior are surprisingly touching as the misfits who struggle with their self-esteem and their family issues. Stallone is hilarious as the voice of King Shark, who is both adorable and terrifying. Davis is also terrific as the cold and manipulative Waller, who is arguably the real villain of the movie.
The Suicide Squad is not a movie for everyone. It is rated R for a reason, as it contains drug use, brief graphic nudity, some sexual references, language throughout, and strong violence and gore. It is also not a movie that takes itself too seriously or tries to be realistic or grounded. It is a movie that embraces its comic book roots and its absurdity, and delivers an entertaining and satisfying experience for fans of the genre.
If you are interested in watching The Suicide Squad, you can find it in theaters or on HBO Max. You can also watch the trailer or check out some user reviews IMDB. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
