Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt in the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, and he does not disappoint. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a spectacular action film that delivers on every level, from the stunning visuals to the gripping plot to the charismatic performances.
The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also helmed the previous two entries, follows Hunt and his team as they try to stop a rogue artificial intelligence called the Entity, which can manipulate information and threaten global security. To do so, they need to find a mysterious key that can unlock the Entity’s secrets, but they are not the only ones who are after it. Hunt’s old nemesis Gabriel (Esai Morales), a ruthless mercenary who has a personal connection to Hunt’s past, is also on the hunt for the key, and he will stop at nothing to get it.
The film is divided into two parts, with the second one scheduled to be released in 2024. The first part sets up the stakes and introduces the main players, while also delivering some of the most impressive action sequences ever seen on screen. The film takes us to various locations around the world, from Dubai to London to Paris to Moscow, and each one offers a different challenge and spectacle for Hunt and his team. Whether it’s a daring heist at the Dubai airport, a high-speed chase on the streets of London, or a breathtaking freefall from the Eiffel Tower, the film never lets up on the adrenaline and excitement.
One of the highlights of the film is the return of some familiar faces from the previous films, such as Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), who provide not only support but also humor and heart to Hunt’s mission. The film also introduces some new characters, such as Hayley Atwell as Kate Walker, a CIA agent who has a complicated relationship with Hunt, and Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, a mysterious woman who holds part of the key. The chemistry between Cruise and Atwell is especially enjoyable, as they exchange witty banter and flirtatious glances while also kicking ass.
The film also pays homage to the original 1996 film by bringing back Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, the former IMF director who once accused Hunt of being a traitor. Kittridge now gives Hunt his new mission and helps him uncover the truth behind the Entity and Gabriel. The film also references some iconic scenes from the first film, such as the self-destructing tape, the vault break-in, and the train chase.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a must-see for fans of the franchise and action lovers alike. It is a thrilling ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more. Tom Cruise proves once again that he is one of the greatest action stars of all time, and he shows no signs of slowing down. The film ends with a cliffhanger that sets up an epic showdown for Part Two, which promises to be even more explosive and exhilarating.
