Retribution is a remake of a Spanish movie of the same name, telling the story of Matt Turner (Liam Neeson), a bank investor in Berlin, who receives a phone call from a stranger telling him that there is a bomb under his driver’s seat. If he tries to get out of the car or fails to follow the stranger’s demands, the bomb will explode. To make matters worse, his two kids are also trapped in the car. Matt has to drive across the city and perform dangerous tasks while trying to figure out the identity and motive of the caller. Meanwhile, the police (led by Noma Dumezweni) think that Matt is the bomber and chase him.
Retribution might satisfy the fans of action movies with Liam Neeson playing a father in peril, but in every other aspect, this movie is just a standard and boring product. The script by Chris Salmanpour lacks any elements that could make the movie stand out; it seems to be written following a familiar formula and predictable plot. The characters are shallow, the dialogues are dull, the twists are not surprising or suspenseful. Liam Neeson acts like he is sleepwalking, showing no tension or emotion on his face. The director Nimród Antal does not use the car setting to create any exciting or creative moments. The ending of the movie is also disappointing and illogical.
Retribution is a movie that does not deserve Liam Neeson’s talent and does not offer any new or interesting experience to the audience. The movie is just a weak and outdated version of Taken , the movie that turned Neeson into an action star in 2008. If you want to watch an action thriller with Liam Neeson, you should skip Retribution and choose his other movies.
That is my opinion on the movie Retribution. You may agree or disagree with me, but I hope you have got an overview of this movie.
